Swine Flu

with one comment

So, news today that a new ‘pandemic’ of swine flu is threatening the health and lives of the citizens of the world.

The dictionary assures me that the word ‘pandemic’ is an adjective which means:

  1. Widespread; general.
  2. Medicine Epidemic over a wide geographic area and affecting a large proportion of the population: pandemic influenza.

Now, I am no health expert, but I surely a couple of hundred confirmed cases of swine flu, and around 20 deaths (the other side of the world) is simply a ‘small outbreak’.

‘Pandemic’ just seems a little dramatic.

Personally I think that this ‘outbreak’ will go the route of bird flu and SARS (i.e. everyone will forget about it in a couple of years time).  Its very sad that some people will fall ill but I don’t think it will be anything like Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’

In the meantime, if you are worried about avoiding contracting swine flu I would recommend reading 5 things you need to know about Swine Flu, written by a friend of mine.

  1. “Pandemic” is a little over-dramatic, but then again this is the same news medium that will spend an entire day talking about the Obamas’ new dog. A potentially deadly disease that could spread to hundreds of people? How about we change it to a mutating virus that can spread via breathing and tell everyone to stay at home. Much more newsworthy.
