failwhale_copySad news today that Twitter has reduced its reply functionality so that you can no longer view the @ replies from people that you aren’t following.

In simple terms – you can no longer view public conversations.

So why is this a big deal?

Twitter is a wonderful social tool, and part of the attractiveness (at least for me) is its openness, its accessibility, and the fact that information sharing is in real time.

For me, Twitter is all about discovering new and interesting people, who are sharing information pertinent to me, and silencing the public conversations will seriously inhibit this.

There doesn’t seem to be any obvious reason why Twitter would have changed this functionality, and so I do hope the decision is made to change it back to the way it was.

  1. Well, I guess you could just follow everyone that’s following you. Of course, if you have hundreds or thousands following you then it would be quite hard to keep up with every tweet. Hmm. I wonder why they did that.
