The Mysterious Tale of the Devenish-Phibbs Family…

with 5 comments

I just had to share this story as I think this could be the most genius thing I have heard about in a long time.

Last week, the Metro Newspaper ran an article about the mysterious “Devenish-Phibbs” family, a family who not only seem to be a ‘dastadly bunch of cads’, but who only seem to be remembered in death by odd bench memorial plaques.

No-body really seems to know who the Devenish-Phibbs are – the only surviving member being a certain Croy Devenish-Phibbs.  Croy claims to be 103 year old and a ‘silver surfer’ who takes part in a social media class – a class which has allowed him to build a website which is he now using to run a campaign to help him find information about his mysterious family.

Still with me?

Aided by a mysterious man called ‘Gary’ (presumably the person who teaches his silver surfer class), Croy uses his website to display the information about his family that sent in by helpful members of the public.  And this information is only available in the form of cryptic and bizarre bench memorial plaques.

The article says:

“Mr Devenish-Phibbs, who says he only checks his e-mail on Wednesdays, wrote: ‘My relations are largely a mystery to me. My mother Ethel was unmarried when I was born and consequently she and I were disowned.’

He insists his quest is genuine despite the inevitable scepticism, which prompted London’s Time Out magazine to look but fail to find him”

Ok, so it’s an obvious hoax by someone who has far too much time on their hands, but its a good one, and possibly the funniest website I have seen for a long time.

I strongly urge you to visit the website and see for yourself, and in the meantime take a look at some pictures of the memorials taken from his gallery below.  These are genius.

  1. The most magnificent and creative list of play on words I have ever seen. And, while it sounds like a hoax, someone would have to a Photoshop genius to create those pictures.

  2. I actually think the pictures are real…I think he has paid to have the benches put around the country! That’s what is so crazy about it

  3. Oh okay, paid, yeah that makes since. Still, it’s genius! My favorite is the one about the one who was a dentist: “She would have hated this plaque.”

  5. I love it! Will be keeping a careful lookout in our local villages, although prolly the Devenish-Phibbs haven’t yet reached rural France. 😀
